How to grow on Bluesky
Growth on Bluesky comes from being findable and worth following. Here is what moves the figure, and how to see which part of it is working for you.
Start with a baseline
Before changing anything, know where you are: followers, how many you gained in the last 30 days, which posts did best, and when your followers are around. Without that you cannot tell a good week from a lucky one. Updrift shows all of it for one account free; a spreadsheet and a weekly screenshot of your profile do most of it by hand.
Profile and pinned post
People decide to follow from your profile, not your post. A clear display name, a bio that says what you post about in plain words (the words people would search), a pinned post that shows your best work, and a link that goes somewhere worth going. Custom domain handles help: @name.yourdomain.com says you are who you say you are.
Starter packs
The fastest follower source on Bluesky by a distance. A starter pack is a list of up to 150 accounts that a new user can follow in one tap. Being in a good pack in your niche brings a steady trickle of new followers for months. Making one that other people share brings more. The starter packs guide has the details, and Updrift shows how many of your new followers each pack brought.
Custom feeds
Discover is not the only feed. Communities live in custom feeds built around topics, tags and lists, and a post that lands in the right feed reaches people who chose to see that topic. Find the feeds your people read, learn what puts a post in them (usually a tag, sometimes an allow list), and post accordingly.
Reply more than you post
Replies are where follows come from. A thoughtful reply to a busy post in your topic is seen by everyone reading that thread, most of whom have never heard of you. Aim for more replies than posts in a week. Updrift's Inbox keeps the replies and mentions you owe in one place, oldest first, so none slip.
Timing
On a chronological feed a post at the wrong hour is a post nobody saw. Find your own best hours and post in them; the best time to post guide explains how they are measured and why the general answer is only a start.
Hashtags
One or two on the post's real topic, on the first post of a thread, measured against your usual. The hashtags guide covers how they work on Bluesky, which is not how they work elsewhere.
Threads and images with alt text
Threads keep a longer thought in one place and are found by their first post. Images with alt text reach people who use screen readers and people who have chosen to see only posts with alt text, and in Updrift's figures posts with an image beat an account's usual more often than text alone. Write the alt text as what the image shows, not as a caption.
Track what works, weekly
Once a week, look at which posts beat your usual and what they had in common: format, length, hour, tags. Then do more of that. Updrift's What works report does the grouping; on the Free plan it shows the top line, on a paid plan the whole report.
A 30-day plan
- Week 1: fix the profile, pin your best post, connect your figures so you have a baseline.
- Week 2: find three custom feeds and two starter packs in your niche; ask to be added to the packs; post for the feeds.
- Week 3: post at a spread of hours, reply every day, add one or two real tags to each post.
- Week 4: read the figures. Keep the hours, formats and tags that beat your usual; drop the rest; make your own starter pack.
Questions
How long does it take to grow on Bluesky?
Most accounts that post a few times a week and reply more than they post see steady growth within a couple of months. The fast jumps usually come from a starter pack or a feed placement, which is why measuring where followers came from matters.
Do I need to post every day?
No. Consistency beats volume: a few good posts a week at your best hours, with replies in between, outperforms a daily post nobody wanted.
Is buying followers a good idea?
No. Bluesky's Community Guidelines prohibit artificially manipulating follower counts, and inflated numbers make every figure you measure afterwards meaningless.
